01 Jul “We see our calm, content and funny dad again” – One Family’s Experience of Dementia Care at The Mill House
Choosing a care home for a loved one is one of the most difficult decisions a family can make, particularly when dementia is involved.
Families often tell us they feel overwhelmed, worried about making the right choice, and uncertain about what life in a care home will really be like for the person they love.
For one family, those feelings were all too familiar. When Ian moved to The Mill House following a hospital stay and a period of respite care, his daughter Lucy describes him as being frightened, disorientated, sad, angry and extremely confused.
Today, things look very different. For Lucy and her family, seeing their dad regain his sense of self has been invaluable.
“Now, when we visit, we see our calm, content and funny dad again, and that is entirely thanks to the team at The Mill House.”
Seeing the Person Behind the Dementia
At The Mill House, we believe every person is unique. Dementia may affect memory, communication and daily life, but it does not change who someone is at their core. Getting to know each resident as an individual is central to the care we provide.
Reflecting on her family’s experience, Lucy said:
“What really sets The Mill House apart is its person-centred approach. Each resident is seen as an individual. The staff look beyond the dementia and take time to understand the person underneath – their history, personality, likes and dislikes.
Care is never delivered as a tick-box exercise. It is thoughtful, timely and always carried out in a way that protects the resident’s dignity.”
By taking time to build relationships, understand personal histories and create meaningful connections, our team helps residents feel safe, valued and truly at home.
A Warm and Welcoming Environment
Moving into a care home can be a significant transition for both residents and their families.
Creating a warm, welcoming and homely atmosphere is something the team at The Mill House works hard to achieve every day.

“Every member of staff is genuinely kind and caring, and nothing ever feels like too much trouble,” Lucy said.
“They have created a warm, homely environment and are always so welcoming.”
Families are encouraged to remain actively involved in their loved one’s life, and our open-door approach means there is always someone available to offer support, reassurance or simply a listening ear.
“The staff have also supported us as a family. They are always happy to talk about how Dad is getting on, share little stories and offer comfort on the difficult days. There is always someone nearby with kindness, reassurance and care.”
Living Well Every Day
Meaningful activities and opportunities for engagement play an important role in wellbeing, confidence and quality of life.
At The Mill House, activities are tailored to residents’ interests, abilities and preferences, helping everyone continue to enjoy purpose, connection and moments of joy.
“The activities are fantastic,” said Lucy. “The coordinators are always busy planning engaging events, thoughtfully tailored to residents’ needs and interests. I have visited other care homes where activities seem to be put on simply to tick a box, but that is not the case at The Mill House. Here, providing residents with an enjoyable and meaningful life is clearly a priority.”
For Ian, maintaining the freedom to walk safely and independently has also been important.
His family take comfort in knowing he can continue enjoying daily walks while remaining safe and supported.
Care That Helps People Thrive
When Ian first arrived at The Mill House, he had lost a significant amount of weight. By taking time to understand his preferences and individual needs, the team were able to support him in rebuilding his strength and confidence.

“The food is freshly cooked, delicious and clearly enjoyed,” Lucy said. “Dad had lost a lot of weight when he first arrived, but the staff took time to understand how best to encourage him to eat, and he is now thriving.”
For families, these seemingly small details often make the biggest difference.
A Family Recommendation
As a qualified Occupational Therapist, Lucy has visited many care settings throughout her career.
Her family’s experience at The Mill House has left a lasting impression.
“As a qualified Occupational Therapist, I have visited many care homes, and I can honestly say that The Mill House stands above them all for dementia care. We feel incredibly lucky that our dad is there. The team has supported him through a very difficult time and brought him back from a very dark place.
I wholeheartedly recommend The Mill House. It is a truly exceptional home for people living with dementia, and the care provided is outstanding. We will always be deeply grateful.”
